Curriculum Overview
Community College Dunshaughlin offers a five or six-year post primary programme to Leaving Certificate. It is aspired that all students take exams at honours level, however other levels are also catered for.
Junior Certificate (Years 1-3)
Three year programme for students
Subjects: Irish, English, Maths, French, German, Science, History, Geography, Art, Materials Technology (Wood), Materials Technology (Metal), Technical Graphics, Business Studies, Home Economics, Music & Musicianship, CSPE, (Civic, Social and Political Education), Religion.
Non-exam subjects - Computers, PE and Social Health and Personal Education
Transition Year (Option for year 4)
This is a one year option for students who complete the Junior Certificate cycle. In particular it is suited to younger students. While the traditional subjects are still taught there is also a great emphasis on other aspects of personal development such as cultural activities, information technology, business enterprise, communications and so on as well as a work experience module. The approach is also different with students being encouraged to cultivate self-learning through, for example, project work and field trips.
Leaving Certificate (Years 4-5 or 5-6 if you take Transition year)
Two year programme after Transition Year or Junior Certificate.
Subjects: Irish, English, Maths, French, German, History, Geography, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Agricultural Science, Art, Accountancy, Business Organisation, Construction Studies, Technical Drawing, Engineering, Home Economics, Applied Maths, Music, Religion.
Non-exam subjects - Computers, PE, Religion and Career Guidance.
Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (Years 4-5 or 5-6 if you take Transition year)
Two year programme taken in conjunction wit hth etraditional Leaving Certificat. Two modules are covered: Preparation for the World of Work and Enterprise Education.
Applied Leaving Certificate (Alternative to Leaving Certificate)
Two-year programme after Junior Certificate or Transition Year based on Continuous Assessment.
Subjects: Social Studies, Information Technology, Mathematical Applications, Office Skills and Retail Distribution, Agriculture/ Horticulture, English and Communications, Art, Gaeilge, French, Careers, Leisure and Recreation, Construction and Manufacturing, Work Experience.
Changing / Dropping Courses or Subjects
The only way for a student to change or drop a subject / course in Community College Dunshaughlin is through the approved procedure involving Ms. Wickham or Ms Gannon, the relevant teacher and parents. This involves obtaining a “change of subject form”, completing it and getting it signed by a parent, and then returning it to the school. The school will facilitate changes up to the end of September if a place exists in the new subject or course.
